How to become a member of Talking Dog and what you can expect throughout the year.

By: Emily Ann Martin

We have all had the daunting feeling of knowing you need to get involved on campus but not knowing the right way to do it. Whether you feel like there is no organization right for you, you do not have the time commitment, or you simply don’t think you are qualified, we have all been there!

The good news is that Talking Dog Agency could be that perfect fit for you. After a summer of jobs, internships and hopefully some fun, school is back in session and Talking Dog’s recruitment is well under way.

We have been in your position and want to alleviate some stress by answering questions about the application process and everything you must look forward to as a member of UGA’s premier full-service student-led advertising and public relations agency.

APPLICATIONS ARE OPEN NOW! So do not walk...RUN to fill them out as they close this Friday, September 3.

Regarding the application, here are some important things to consider:

  1. The application is open to ANYONE interested in the PR/Advertising industry! Talking Dog Agency is not limited to students in The Grady College of Journalism and Mass Communications that are AdPR majors. Talking Dog Agency welcomes all members of UGA and values a diverse environment.

  2. The time commitment is relatively low. On average, students can expect to commit around five hours a week to Talking Dog. Those five hours are made up of weekly agency meetings, client team meetings and any necessary work that needs to be completed for the client. Agency wide meetings will be held weekly on Wednesday nights at 7:00 pm in the Journalism building. We are super excited to be back in-person this year and meet all the new faces!

  3. Worried about experience? Don’t be! We understand not everyone has the necessary experience you may think one needs to join Talking Dog. While we do look for experienced members, we also accept individuals looking to gain experience. If this sounds like you, center your application around eagerness, excitement, and your enthusiasm to learn. Share your goals with us because we want to help you achieve them!

  4. Make sure to touch up your portfolio and resume before submitting to Talking Dog. It has probably been a couple of months since you last looked over your resume, so do not forget to update it! We want to see all relevant experiences, especially what you were up to over the summer. Regarding a portfolio, if you do not have one, don’t worry! Class writing samples or graphic design projects are great materials to submit. Both are ways to show us who you are and make your application stand out!

Regarding Talking Dog, what you can expect as a member is…

  1. Real world experience! Once selected as one of the seven positions you apply for, you are put on a team and given a real-world client. Throughout the semester you will work with your client, serving their needs. Each role holds a different responsibility which you can read more about here.

  2. Networking on and off campus. Being a member of Talking Dog gives you an opportunity to make connections with students at UGA but also with people outside of campus. These individuals include industry professionals with real world experience that could be potential employers one day. Not only does Talking Dog teach you the power of networking, but it also gives you the opportunity to apply it.

  3. Resume building. The experience is the most important part; however, Talking Dog Agency is a great resource to have on your resume. It is a great talking point and useful way to make a connection when looking for internships or jobs after school.

The application closes THIS FRIDAY, September 3 at 11:59 pm. If you have any further questions or want more information about Talking Dog, be sure to follow all our social channels: Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter.
